But why does the idol precisely choose Callina and Merik as weapons and the others as enemies? How does it decide who to pick as an 'ally' and who not?

Ah, also, do Callina and Merik see the 'door' with those bright colors while the others see it black?

My guess is the idol hates pretty much everything (except maybe the priests who fed it, way back when), but since our protagonists were already close enough to be influenced, it used them against the newcomers. Probably didn't take much influence, since they were already at odds...

Absolutely right. Callina and Merik are on the platform, in easy reach. It was trying to get them - when Merik's concentration was broken, it seized its chance.

Caribouchat: the green tracery is part of the "shield" Merik is using. If you look back at the earlier scene, you can see the Hunters saw this, too. When the gate opens, it will go black.
